Support for Student Protests in Serbia
27. 12. 2024 | Politics
The Peace Institute collective expresses its support to the students, professors, lecturers and all others who have been protesting against corruption, arrogance and authoritarianism of the ruling class in Novi Sad, Belgrade, Niš and other cities in Serbia for several weeks. According to some estimates, these are the most massive protests since October 5, 2000. The protests were triggered by the tragic event on November 1, when a canopy collapsed at the Novi Sad railway station, killing 15 people and injuring many more. This accident exposed the systemic corruption that permeates the power networks in Serbia and further deepened the justified dissatisfaction among the people. The protesters are demanding social justice, responsible governance and equality before the law for all. With these political actions, they are raising hope that the long-standing dissatisfaction and despair of the people can be transformed into a strong political force. The innovation and creativity, the perseverance and intelligence, and above all the courage of the protesters, indicate that a more democratic political climate can be formed in Serbia. At the Peace Institute, we express our solidarity and support them in their fight for a better future for all!
