The Cost of Statelessness: A Livelihoods Analysis

The project is carried out in four countries: Bangladesh, Kenya, Slovenia and Sri Lanka, and is coordinated by Kingston University, UK. The project aims to provide empirical insight into the livelihoods of stateless persons to help governments and UNHCR to protect these individuals and advance their social, economic, and personal well-being. In Slovenia the project focuses on livelihoods of the erased people who live or lived in the country without legal status, taking into account that they have not necessarily been stateless.

Project execution
In order to achieve the goals of the project the following activities are being carried out:
- Gathering data on the livelihoods of stateless people in Bangladesh, Kenya, Slovenia, and Sri Lanka.
- Measuring the benefits brought about by recent restorative initiatives in Bangladesh, Kenya, Slovenia and Sri Lanka.
- Identifying obstacles to stateless people’s access to education, livelihoods and gender parity in Bangladesh, Kenya, Slovenia and Sri Lanka.
- Dissemination of research findings through publications and policy briefs.
- Informing policies and programs of the U.S., other governments, and the UN that address statelessness.
