Populism at the intersections of civilizationist and securitarian political discourses
Comparative analysis of parliamentary discussions on migration in Austria and Slovenia showed that right-wing politicians in both countries use populist antagonisms and affective appeals of threat and anger to portrait migrants as a security, economy and cultural threat. We have also found differences, which indicate a more civilizationist and identitarian discourse in Austria, as the debates there were focused on integration (of Muslims in particularly), and nationalist and securitarian populist discourse in Slovenia. At our online project meeting that took place on November 5-6, 2020 we mostly focused to conceptualize and understand similarities and differences of our findings so far in the two states.
