Hateful discourses in the digital age

Last week, on October 2nd, we organized the Program Group Symposium “Hateful Discourses in the Digital Age: How Neoliberalism and the Radical Right are Shaping our Future.” We have analyzed hate speech and online violence, finding that the space for public debate is shrinking, that the interests of capital, corporations and financial markets have prevailed over the public interest, and that the rule of law lacks effective mechanisms to protect democratic standards and human dignity. We analysed what the economic and political context is for the described changes, why we are witnessing a turn to the (radical) right, which discourses and movements shape the current political agenda and how are states responding to these trends. The speakers tackled these issues with historical analyzes of concepts, theories, discourses, institutional practices and databases; they addressed both problems of such developments and mechanisms of resistance.
