Anti-gender appropriation of feminist abortion discourse through affect

Anti-gender appropriation of feminist abortion discourse through affect

General conference of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) took place at University College Dublin from 12-15 August 2024. At the conference, Leja Markelj presented a paper ‘Anti-gender appropriation of feminist abortion discourse: Shifting human rights frame through affect,’ co-authored with Dr Mojca Pajnik and Dr Živa Humer. In the paper, the authors examine feminist and anti-gender discourse on the right to abortion, drawing on the concept of affective atmospheres. They are interested in the appropriation strategies through which anti-gender actors in the abortion debate adopt the human rights discourse usually associated with liberal movements, and how they strategically mobilise affects in doing so.

The study was carried out as part of the Horizon 2020 FIERCE research project.
