New book “Democracy and Media in Europe – A Discursive-Material Approach” by Nico Carpentier and Jeffrey Wimmer

The new book “Democracy and Media in Europe – A Discursive-Material Approach” has been produced as part of the European scientific research project MeDeMAP, drawing on the theoretical work and research findings developed throughout that scientific research project. The Peace Institute in Ljubljana is one of the project partners together with faculties and research institutes in Austria, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Poland and Portugal.

Authored by research team members Nico Carpentier and Jeffrey Wimmer and available through open access, the book offers an in-depth look into media’s role in fostering informed citizenry, fair representation, vibrant democratic debates and participation while addressing the threats to democratic systems and the roles the media can play in democracy.

About the Authors

Nico Carpentier is Extraordinary Professor at Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic) and Visiting Professor at Tallinn University (Estonia) and at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (Suzhou, China). He is the leader of the Charles University team involved in the MeDeMAP project. Jeffrey Wimmer is Professor of Communication Science with an emphasis on media reality at the University of Augsburg, Germany. He is currently a member of MeDeMAP’s Czech research team.

 About the project

The European scientific research project “MeDeMAP – Mapping Media for Future Democracies”, funded by the Horizon Europe program, gathers 10 European faculties and research institutes with the aim of understanding the dynamics of the media and their impacts on European democratic systems. The partners are focused on studying the democratic functions performed by the media, their legal frameworks and regulations, the provision of informative content to different audiences, and the role of the media in shaping political engagement.
