Final ECSEuro conference on Enacting Citizenship and Solidarity ‘From Below’

Members of the entire ECSEuro project consortium participated in the final ECSEuro conference, which took place in Hamburg from October 9 to 11. The conference, titled “Enacting Citizenship and Solidarity ‘From Below’,” brought together scholars in critical migration studies, urban geography, social movement studies, and solidarities to engage in illuminating presentations, lively debates, inspiring discussions, and intellectual networking.

Four panels on “Caring for the Commons,” “Struggles against Profit-Orientation in Housing and Care,” “Local Organizing,” and “Building Solidarity Cities” addressed the most pressing current issues in the fields of housing, care, and migration. The conference was initiated by a public event with activists from Hamburg and Berlin, who spoke wholeheartedly about the experiences of people on the move across Germany. It was also highlighted by an open-format discussion on the relationship between institutional municipalism and urban activism ‘from below,’ followed by a roundtable on Enacting Solidarity and Citizenship at Urban Scales with contributions from Donatella della Porta (Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence), Margit Mayer (TU Berlin), and Martin Bak Jørgensen (Aalborg University).

ECSEuro project members will now use this inspiration to focus on the dissemination of their research in the form of books and journal articles – publications will be published very soon!
